It’s all about motivation

August 29th 2007

Personally I find when doing pretty much anything it helps me to look at how someone else is performing to enhance my performance. It’s good to identify that you’re slacking and it really helps to see someone else doing well to get you out of a rut.

I have only been doing this for a week exactly as of today, Starr Horne has only been doing it a couple of days so I would say were in a similar position and face similar challenges. I hope seeing his progress motivates me - who knows maybe I will have the same effect on him.

I wish him the best of luck and I have already subscribed to his feed.

There is no “we” in MicroISV

August 29th 2007

You will have heard the phrase “There is no I in team” I’m sure. The opposite is true of a MicroISV - “There is no we in MicroISV” and the people running a successful one should be proud of themselves.

Ian Landsman keeps an excellent blog of his MicroISV and I think he hits the nail on the head in his recent post found here that they should be a one man band. If www.plentyoffish.com can be managed by one man and generate over a million dollars in revenue per month from google ads alone, it shows that success and size are not the same thing.

True we all would love that kind of success, even that of 37signals would be amazing. I on the other hand would be perfectly happy with the same degree of success that Ian has had. To be profitable out of something you create yourself is what I call amazing.

Make it something you enjoy

August 25th 2007

Nearly all of the successful entrepreneurs communicate a common message. To be successful you have to be passionate about your product, be it a blog, a web app, a bottle of beer, or an airliner. You have to have an interest and a true passion for it to succeed. If you don’t love it and want to use the service or consume the product, how can you expect anyone else to?

I have to whole heartedly agree with this so I thought I would list some of the things I am most passionate about or have a keen interest in:-

• Computers – I love the way they bring the globe together and how they can help people’s lives in many various and wonderful ways.

• Self Improvement – Well I know I am far from perfect, so why not invest some time into me, my skills and develop new good habits.

• Mountain Biking – What a wonderful sport, fast and furious sometimes, calm and tranquil the next.

• Camping/Bushcraft – The great outdoors, it’s a fantastic feeling to be at one with nature escaping the fast digital life.

• Nutrition/Fitness – The body is a machine and it needs love and attention just like a car, feed it the right fuels and it will perform better than ever.

• Business – I would love to be my own boss, the keeper of my own destiny. It must be a wonderful feeling creating something that provides you a living and you get to work with it and love it every day.

These are just some of my interests; some take a bigger slice of my life than others, some should take a bigger slice than others. Whatever my business idea is I think it needs to combine at least two, if not three of the above for me to really get a strong passion about my product or service.

The Tools

August 23rd 2007

I thought I would share with your my working environment that I will be utilising throughout my project. PC’s have taken a bit of a slating lately with the launch of the new iMac, however as you can see my workspace is gorgeous and low profile.

Here is the whole layout

For completness I thought I would take one of my day job working environment which is almost as impressive.

To me having a nice clean and tidy place to work is essential to getting things done. It helps me stay organised and focus on the task at hand without too many distractions.

One of my colleagues doesn’t share my view on the matter.

Creating a business

August 22nd 2007

So what do I know about creating a business? Nothing really. I find myself reading many business blogs, self help blogs, books on all things business, and even business magazines. So armed with this knowledge and a great aptitude for computing how do I use it? Well I don’t.

Like many others out there I procrastinate my ideas, waste my knowledge, and always look at tomorrow as the perfect day to change all that. Creating a company is hard work, it takes time, energy, commitment and sacrifice, all of which you have to do while keeping down a job.

So why am I telling you this? I have about 5 regular readers of my blog, they’re all my family and they only view it to see what I am up to. I am writing this post to look back on and see how much things develop along the way, if they do at all.

I have no idea what I am doing, what I am going to do, or how to do it. I can only tell you that I am going to share the journey with everyone so that hopefully I can add value to someone else’s life as well as my own. This journey is called Thinklife and it starts here.
